Grilling tips for your July 4 cookout

Sarah Donohoe, home economist for the Certified Angus Beef ^®brand, shared tips for a legendary Independence Day cookout on WVEC-TV on June 26.

• To make restaurant-quality steaks at home, choose the right cuts. Ribeye, strip steaks, tenderloin and top sirloin are all great picks!
• No one likes dry, chewy steak, so look for lots of marbling – those little flecks of flavor. The best cooks know the Certified Angus Beef ^®brand is famous for its marbling.
• When you're grilling, never use a fork to turn your steaks. Always use a spatula or tongs to keep those tasty juices from escaping.
• How long do steaks need to stay on the grill? There's no one-size-fits-all answer – it depends on a lot of factors, like how thick your steaks are, how you like them cooked and the temperature of your grill. In general, cook 1-inch thick steaks over medium heat about 5 to 6 minutes per side for medium rare.
• Once the steaks are cooked, take them off the grill and let them rest on a clean plate for a few minutes. That keeps those delicious juices in the beef, where they belong, and not all over your plate!
